کرد پیری عمر وی هشتاد سال
از حکیمی حال ضعف خود سؤال

گفت دندانم ز خوردن گشته سست
ناید از وی شغل خاییدن درست

چون نگردد لقمه نرمم در دهان
هضم آن بر معده می آید گران

هضم در معده چو باشد ناتمام
قوت اعضا چه سان بخشد طعام

منتی باشد ز تو بر جان من
گر بری این سستی از دندان من

گفت با آن پیر دانشور حکیم
کای دلت از محنت پیری دو نیم

چاره ضعفت پس از هشتاد سال
جز جوانی نیست وان باشد محال

رسته دندان تو گردد قوی
گر ازین هشتاد چل واپس روی

لیک چون واپس شدن مقدور نیست
گر به این سستی بسازی دور نیست

چون اجل از تن جدایی بخشدت
از همه سستی رهایی بخشدت

English translation

An elder, whose age had reached eighty years, Asked a wise physician about his state of weakness. He said, 'My teeth have grown weak from eating, The task of chewing no longer proceeds properly. Since the morsel does not turn soft in my mouth, Digesting it is heavy on the stomach. When digestion in the stomach is incomplete, How can food grant strength to the limbs? It would be a favor from you to my soul If you could remove this weakness from my teeth.' The wise physician said to that elder, 'O you whose heart is split in two by the affliction of old age! The cure for your weakness after eighty years Is nothing but youth, and that is impossible. The row of your teeth would grow strong If you could go back from eighty to forty. But since turning back is not possible, It is not far-fetched if you reconcile with this weakness. When death grants you separation from the body, It will grant you release from all weakness.'
