بخش ۵۹ - حکایت آن شیخ صفی ابوتراب نسفی که در اثنای جهاد بین الصفین بالین استراحت نهاد / Section 59 - The Tale of that Pure Sheikh, Abu Turab al-Nasafi, Who Laid down to Rest in the Midst of Jihad Between the Two Ranks

English translation

Abu Turab, that gem of the ocean of honor, By whom the soil of Nasaf gained dignity, When he felt no internal struggle left within himself, He rode the steed of effort toward the enemies. When the ranks on both sides were drawn up straight, And the clamor of battle arose from the lines, Hedismounted from his steed, With a heart as brave as a lion's. He spread a carpet with his cloak beneath his side, Made the sword his bedfellow, and his shield his pillow. He fell asleep between the two ranks in such a way That his companions could hear his snoring. When the period of his sleep had passed, His head leaped away from the shield. He became the support of the army of the vigilant, And mended the breaches in the ranks of his comrades. A questioner said: 'On the day of battle, When a man's heart bursts from fear, I am greatly astonished by your sleeping.' The Sheikh smiled at that remark and said: 'If your sense of security on the day of battle Is any less than on your wedding and consummation nights, You are far from the station of trust in God (tawakkul), And you stand on the path of self-delusion. For the man whose heart has no rust of doubt, The bed of sleep and the rank of battle are one and the same. Whether the task is difficult or easy, All are equal in the view of pre-eternal grace. Since the knot of your certainty has become weak, Whatever befalls you is due to your own weakness.'
