بخش ۲۸ - حکایت آن طفل خرد که نان بزرگ در دست داشت، می خورد و می گریست که این نان اندک است و اشتهای من بسیار / Section 28 - The Tale of That Small Child Who Held a Large Loaf of Bread in Hand, Eating and Weeping That This Bread Is Little and My Appetite Is Great

Original content

English translation

A clever, quick-stepping man set out for Baghdad, And by fate a child crossed his path. From afar his face broke the disc of the moon, And, like his own face, a round loaf of bread was in his hand. He kept eating from that loaf and weeping. The clever one said to him, 'What is this weeping?' He said, 'I am a child, all alone, With a stomach hungry at the table of hope. My appetite is fierce, and this loaf is small; How can I ever travel the road to satiety? I am so bitter-mouthed from weeping Because I know this will soon be gone. I will be left head bowed from lack of provision, With neither bread in my hand nor a full stomach.' Come, cupbearer, with that wine which grants fullness, That gives me the strength of a lion in this thicket. Give it, that I may charge forth like a raging lion And overturn the whole affair of profit and loss. Come, minstrel, and from the bow of the rebab, Whose string has drawn its tension from the thread of the soul, From every low note loose an arrow, And cast at me a cry as at a hunted prey.
