آن عرابی به شتر قانع و شیر
در یکی بادیه شد مرحله گیر

ناگهان جمعی از ارباب قبول
شب در آن مرحله کردند نزول

خاست مردانه به مهمانیشان
شتری برد به قربانیشان

روز دیگر ره پیشینه سپرد
بهر ایشان شتر دیگر برد

عذر گفتند که باقیست هنوز
چیزی از داده دوشین امروز

گفت حاشا که ز پس مانده دوش
دیگ جود آیدم امروز به جوش

روز دیگر به کرم ورزی پشت
کرد محکم شتری دیگر کشت

بعد ازان بر شتری راکب شد
بهر کاری ز میان غایب شد

قوم چون خوان نوالش خوردند
عزم رحلت ز دیارش کردند

دست احسان و کرم بگشادند
بدره زر به عیالش دادند

دور ناگشته هنوز از دیده
میهمانان کرم ورزیده

آمد آن طرفه عرابی از راه
دید آن بدره در آن منزلگاه

گفت کین چیست زبان بگشودند
صورت حال بدو بنمودند

خاست بدره به کف و نیزه به دوش
وز پی قوم برآورد خروش

کای سفیهان خطا اندیشه
وی لئیمان خساست پیشه

بود مهمانیم از محض کرم
نه چو بیع از پی دینار و درم

داده خویش ز من بستانید
پس رواحل به ره خود رانید

ور نه تا جان برود از تنتان
در تن از نیزه کنم روزنتان

داده خویش گرفتند و گذشت
وان عرابی ز قفاشان برگشت

English translation

That Bedouin, content with camel and milk, Settled down at a stage in a certain desert. Suddenly, a group of acceptable people Descended to stay at that stage for the night. He rose manfully to host them as guests, And brought a camel to sacrifice for them. The next day, following the previous path, He brought another camel for them. They excused themselves, saying that some of Yesterday's gift still remains today. He said, 'Far be it that from yesterday's leftovers My cauldron of generosity should boil today!' On the third day, supporting his acts of generosity, He stood firm and slaughtered another camel. Afterward, he mounted a camel And vanished from among them for some business. When the group finished eating from his table of bounty, They resolved to depart from his land. They opened the hand of benevolence and generosity And gave a purse of gold to his family. They had not yet gone far from sight, Those guests who had received his generosity, When that remarkable Bedouin returned from his way And saw that purse in that dwelling place. He asked, 'What is this?' and they opened their tongues, And showed him the state of affairs. He arose with the purse in hand and spear on shoulder, And raised a cry in pursuit of the group: 'O foolish ones of mistaken thoughts, And O base ones of mean nature! My hosting of you was out of pure generosity, Not like a sale for the sake of dinars and dirhams! Take back your gift from me, And then drive your mounts on your way. Otherwise, until life departs from your bodies, I shall make holes in your bodies with my spear!' They took back their gift and departed, And that Bedouin turned back from behind them.
