یوسف کنعان، چو به مصر آرمید
صیت وی از مصر، به کنعان رسید

بود، در آن غم کده، یک دوستش
پرشده ی مغز وفا، پوستش

ره به سوی مصر جمالش سپرد
آینه ای بهر ره آورد برد

یوسف ازو کرد، نهانی، سؤال
کای شده محرم به حریم وصال!

در طلبم، رنج سفر برده ای
زین سفرم، تحفه، چه آورده ای؟

گفت: به هر سو نظر انداختم
هیچ متاعی، چو تو، نشناختم

آینه ای، بهر تو، کردم به دست
پاک، ز هرگونه غباری که هست

تا چو به آن، دیده ی خود، واکنی...
طلعت زیبات، تماشا کنی

تحفه ای افزون ز لقای تو، چیست؟
گر روی از جای، به جای تو، کیست؟

نیست جهان را به صفای تو، کس
غافل ازین، تیره دلانند و بس

«جامی»، ازین تیره دلان، پیش باش
صیقلی آینه ی خویش باش

تا چو بتابی رخ، ازین تیره جای
یوسف غیب تو، شود رونمای

English translation

When Joseph of Canaan settled in Egypt, His fame reached Canaan from Egypt. In that house of grief, he had a friend, Whose very skin was filled with the marrow of loyalty. He made his way toward the Egypt of his beauty, And brought a mirror as a gift. Joseph asked him, in secret, 'O you who have become intimate with the sanctuary of union! In seeking me, you have borne the hardships of travel; What gift have you brought me from this journey?' He said: 'Whichever way I cast my gaze, I recognized no commodity like you. I obtained a mirror for you, Clean of any kind of dust that exists, So that when you open your eyes to it, You may behold your beautiful countenance. What gift is greater than meeting you? If you depart from a place, who can take your place? There is no one in the world with your purity, None are heedless of this but the dark-hearted.' Jami, step ahead of these dark-hearted ones; Be the polisher of your own mirror, So that when you turn your face from this dark place, Your unseen Joseph may reveal himself.
