Section 122 - The Tale of the Commander of the Faithful Hasan, May God Be Pleased with Him, with that Isolated Young Man

Original content

English translation

Hasan, that grandson of the Prophet and secret of the saints, Whose countenance was the rising-place of manifest lights, Went into the house of that young man, Walking with warm steps on the path of the people of heart. He saw him with doors closed to God's creation, And sitting isolated from all people. He said: What is your desire from this oneness? Who is the companion of your soul in this solitude? He replied: He who resides in my heart is the one; He is the one who sowed the seed of the heart in my water and clay. He and I are in this solitude; There is no room for anyone else in between. He asked again: In this cottage, What is your household possession? He said: What I have in this house Is the heart's fear of God's wrath. As I look around this house, I have no other possession but this. He spoke again: The pleasant assembly of Hasan of Basra Goes on far and wide. His preaching tears away the veil of negligence And removes laziness from one's nature. Why do you not go to his assembly, So that you may hear points of wisdom from him? He replied: Worshiping God through the talk of others Comes from none but the unaware. Oh, how poor is that servant on the path of God Whose strength of foot is given by the advice of an advisor! I am engaged in my own wakefulness; Tell the morning bird not to wake me up.
