English translation

A traveler desired [to go to] the Kaaba, But his mother kept him back from it. His Kaaba was indeed his mother; He circumambulated around her head. When the good woman packed her bags from this house [passed away], He obtained the price of her house. From that price, when it was counted, He made his pocket the treasury of fifty dinars. With staff in hand and sandals on feet, He traversed the desert on the way to the Kaaba. When he cut across a few stages of the path, Suddenly a highwayman came upon him. He said, 'O Sheikh, what do you have in your pocket? It is a fault for a Sufi to have a pocket full of gold.' Since he was of truthful conduct and truthful nature, He did not let go of the way of truthfulness. He said, 'In my pocket, as provisions for the road, I have no gold dinars except fifty.' The highwayman said, 'Bring it out, lo, Whatever you have hidden in the tight fold of your pocket.' He took it and counted them one by one, He kissed them and returned them to him. He said, 'Through this truthfulness of yours, my own deficiency and lack became diminished. Your truthfulness saved me from falsehood, and raised my station to the heavens. The arrow of your truth was what captured me, making me the deer of your snare and the hound of your leash.' Then, with urgent pleading and deep humility, He made the traveler ride upon his own mount, Saying, 'With this mount, traverse the road, for I am coming right after you.' The next year, he washed his hands of the world, And rode his mount to the sanctuary in pursuit of him. Both of them remained together as master and disciple, Until death severed the thread of their companionship.
