از حسن آن بصری نافذ بصر
نکته ای آرند عجب مختصر

کز دل غفلت زده گر دم فشاند
آن نفس پاک که حجاج راند

گفت فضولی که نه در بندگی
کش پی آن داد خدا زندگی

ساعتی از عمر به پایان برد
گرچه در آن ملک سلیمان برد

شاید اگر داغ به جانش نهند
مالش محرومی از آنش دهند

پیش وی آید المی جانگداز
سوزد ازان حسرت دور و دراز

همچو حسن هر که بود هوشمند
گوش کند از لب حجاج پند

حکمت نو یافته هر جا بود
گم شده خاطر دانا بود

گرچه بیابد به رهش بی طلب
گیردش از خاک به دست ادب

گوهر گنجینه جان سازدش
در صدف سینه نهان سازدش

جامی اگر خلق تو آمد حسن
از لب هر ظالم حجاج فن

نکته حکمت که رسد گوش کن
ظلم رساننده فراموش کن

English translation

From that Hasan of Basra, who possessed keen sight, They relate a wonderfully concise anecdote: That if even from a negligent heart a breath is drawn, [Or] that pure word which Hajjaj uttered... A meddler said that [Hajjaj] did not live in servitude, For which purpose God had granted him life; He brought the hours of his life to an end, Even though in it he ruled a kingdom like Solomon's. It is fitting if they place a brand of shame upon his soul, And chastise him with deprivation because of it. A soul-melting pain shall come before him, And he shall burn from that long and distant regret. Whoever is intelligent, like Hasan, Listens to counsel even from the lips of Hajjaj. Newly found wisdom, wherever it may be, Is the lost property of the wise mind. Even if he finds it on his path without seeking, He lifts it from the dust with respectful hands, Makes it the jewel of the treasury of his soul, And conceals it within the oyster shell of his chest. O Jami, if your character is beautiful like Hasan's, From the lips of any tyrant skilled in the ways of Hajjaj, Listen to any point of wisdom that reaches you, And forget the cruelty of the one who delivered it.
