Section 101 - The Tale of the Monk Who Was Not Deceived by Satan's Claim of Being Jesus Descended from Heaven

Original content

English translation

In a monk's heart, the concern for faith took root, He became a corner-dweller in this two-doored monastery. He closed the door of companionship to the faces of people, Free from creation, he sat in solitude. No matter how much the devil rushed left and right, He found no way to lead him astray. One day, he raised his head from the dust of his door, And knocked on the door with the fingertip of politeness. The monk called out from the monastery, 'Who is it? Who is at the door, and what is the purpose of his knocking?' He said, 'I am Jesus from the highest heaven, Come to be your leader in faith.' He said, 'I have learned his religion, And illuminated my eyes with his light. If he has brought that same initial religion, He has done a useless deed. And if he has descended to bring another religion, I will never accept that religion from him.' When the devil saw that his hypocrisy and deception Had no effect on that pure heart, He cried out, 'I am Iblis, But you are safe from my deception. Whatever you ask of error or righteousness, I will answer you in the path of truth.' He said, 'I am aware of your deceit, And I do not desire your conversation.' When the devil turned back, full of shame, The monk called out after him: 'O you whose habit and nature have become crookedness, I ask you a question or two, tell me the truth: In this broken sphere of the world, When do you have power over this group?' He said, 'On the day when, from the darkness of anger, A veil is drawn over their hearts and eyes, Their knowledge and insight diminish, And the back of their piety is bent. Like a ball in the hands of infants, Each one rejoicing in hitting and carrying it, They fall helpless before my polo-stick, Their state changing with every breath.'
