Section 41 - The Tale of the Mystic with an Awakened Heart and Night Vigil

Original content

English translation

A mystic who found light in the darkness of the night Closed his eyes completely to sleep.

At night, when he averted his gaze from the sun, He lit the candle of vision until dawn.

Every eyelash, shedding bloody tears from his eyes, Was indeed like a knot tied to his eyebrow.

One day, a busybody asked him, 'O you whose path has not been blocked by sleep or fancy,

Since your awakened heart is liberated from sleep, Why must you close your eyes to sleep?

If the pain of sleeplessness weighs heavily on you, What harm would a single moment of rest do to you?'

He replied, 'It is not fitting that the Lord of the universe Should descend every night to the lowest heaven,

And cry out: "From the ranks of those on the journey, Who is there that will come to My door to seek forgiveness,

So that I may make My grace his mediator, And make My mercy accept his apology?"

In such a state, should I lay my head down to sleep, And turn a deaf ear to this sweet address?

While He has opened His gaze of favor toward me, Should the eye of my fortune be closed to Him?

Whoever claims to be in passionate love with Him, Yet sleeps away from His beautiful face,

His claim is devoid of sincerity and light, Like the breath of the false dawn.'

Jami, if your eye is illuminated, And there is a window in your heart to the garden of the soul,

Be firm of foot on this path, not weak; Keep your eye on the One whose eye is on you.
