Section 55 - The Tale of the Old Villager with His Son

Original content

English translation

A simple man went traveling with his son, Both of them loading their travel gear onto one small donkey. Their feet were wounded by the hardship of the road, As they reached the top of a mountain before them. A mountain of majestic height and grandeur, With a surging sea at the foot of the mountain. On top of that mountain was a very narrow path, So treacherous that even the foot of imagination would stumble in crossing it. No one dared to pass through there, Unless they made feet of their bellies like a snake. Whatever fell from that narrow path, The depth of the sea would be its final resting place. Suddenly, that little donkey slipped from the path, The son cried out after it, 'O God, My donkey has slipped from this path, do not abandon it, Wherever it may be, keep it safe!' The elder said, 'Raise your voice less, O son, For control has also slipped away from its hands. If you desire the true command, rise up straight: To believe in free will here is an error.'
