بود یکی شاه که در ملک و مال
عهد وزیری چو رسیدی به سال

دست قلم ساش جدا ساختی
چون قلم از بند و برانداختی

هر که گرفتی ز هوا دست او
پایه اقبال شدی پست او

دست وزارت به وی آراستی
جان حسود از حسدش کاستی

روزی ازین قاعده ناپسند
ساخت جدا دست وزیری ز بند

دست بریده به هوا برفکند
تاش بگیرند صلا درفکند

چشم خرد کرد فراز آن وزیر
دست دگر کرد دراز آن وزیر

دست خود از بیخردی خود گرفت
بهر وزارت ره مسند گرفت

تجربه نگرفت ز دست نخست
دست خود از دست دگر نیز شست

جامی ازان پیش که تیغ اجل
دست تو کوتاه کند از عمل

دست امل از همه کوتاه کن
در صف کوته املان راه کن

English translation

There was a king who in his realm and wealth, When a vizier's term reached a year, Would sever his pen-writing hand, And cast him down from office like a pen cut from its joint. Whosoever caught his [severed] hand from the air, The foundation of his prosperity would be cast down. [Yet another] would adorn himself with the hand of ministry, While the soul of the envious diminished out of envy. One day, according to this unpleasing custom, The king severed a vizier's hand from the joint. He threw the severed hand into the air, And called out for someone to catch it. That vizier closed the eye of wisdom, And stretched out his other hand. Out of foolishness, he caught his own hand, And took the path to the seat of the ministry. He learned no lesson from his first hand, And thus washed his hand of his other hand as well. Jami! Before the sword of death Shortens your hand from action, Shorten your hand of desire from all things, And join the ranks of those with short desires.
