عربی چند به هم ذوق کنان
لب گشادند به نادر سخنان

یکی از نجد حکایت می کرد
یکی از وجد شکایت می کرد

یکی از ناقه و محمل می گفت
یکی از وادی و ساحل می گفت

یکی از عشق به خوبان عرب
یکی از سعی در اسباب طرب

ناگهان مخلصی از ملک عجم
زد به سر منزل آن قوم قدم

به فنون ادبش راه نبود
وز زبان عرب آگاه نبود

شد گمانش که دعا می خوانند
سخن از حمد و ثنا می رانند

طلب عفو گنهکاریهاست
بر در لطف عفو زاریهاست

او هم آنجا به تواضع بنشست
گریه و آه و فغان در پیوست

هر چه آن قوم بیان می کردند
با هم اسرار عیان می کردند

او به تقلید همان را می گفت
گوهر اشک به مژگان می سفت

حشو می گفت و دعا می پنداشت
ذم همی خواند و ثنا می پنداشت

لیک چون بر لبش آن خاص کلام
بود در معنی اخلاص تمام

یافت درباره وی حکم دعا
داد خاصیت غفران و رضا

شد ازان دعوت از نخوت دور
جرم از عفو و گناهان مغفور

کرد از اخلاص ز تقصیر بری
بر مس قلب خود اکسیر گری

English translation

A few Arabs, sharing their joy, Opened their lips to rare and exquisite speech. One was narrating a tale of Najd, Another was lamenting out of spiritual ecstasy. One spoke of the she-camel and the litter, Another spoke of the valley and the shore. One spoke of love for the beauties of Arabia, Another of striving for the means of mirth. Suddenly, a sincere soul from the land of Persia Set foot in the dwelling of those people. He had no acquaintance with the arts of literature, And was unaware of the Arabic tongue. He came to assume that they were reciting prayers, Uttering words of praise and glorification, That they were seeking forgiveness for sins, Wailing at the door of the grace of forgiveness. He sat down there in humility, And joined in with weeping, sighs, and lamentations. Whatever those people expressed, Revealing secrets to one another, He, in imitation, said the same, Threading the pearls of tears upon his eyelashes. He uttered filler, thinking it was prayer, He recited blame, thinking it was praise. But because on his lips, those particular words Were accompanied by absolute sincerity in meaning, It took the ruling of a prayer for him, And yielded the effect of forgiveness and divine pleasure. Through that prayer, he became distant from pride, His offenses were pardoned, and his sins forgiven. Through sincerity, he was cleared of his shortcoming, Working alchemy upon the copper of his heart.
