Section 53 - The Tale of the Rooster and the Muezzin

Original content

English translation

To the rooster, that proud crowned one, The muezzin said at the time of prayer: No wise one knows the time like you, Nor fears the passing of time like you. With such wisdom, O storyteller, Your place should have been on the battlements of the Divine Throne. Why have you gathered a flock of several hens, And why do you wander at the bottom of every dunghill? He said: At first my status was lofty, But the lust of my self threw me into this lowliness. If I had bypassed the self and its lusts, How would I be wandering at the bottom of every dunghill? I would have been an intimate in the gardens of sanctity, And a companion to the Rooster of the Throne.
