Section 61 - The Tale of Tohfeh the Female Singer

Original content

English translation

A merchant was passing through Baghdad, His path happened to lead to the slave market. From that direction, a voice reached his ear, Which the slave-dealer was calling out: 'Where is an agile and gambling companion, Who will clean out all that he holds in his hand, Empty his purse of silver and gold, And ruin his house and household, To buy a beloved like a full moon, A gift from paradise, named Tohfeh. Her face is a reflection of the lamp of the sanctuary, Her stature is a rosebush from the garden of Iram. Her tress is a snare on the path of seekers, Her ruby lip is the desire of the souls of dry-lipped ones. Her eye is a spring-source of seduction and grace, Her beauty mark is the seed of desire for the needy. When she walks, she carries away with her graceful gait The peace of the residents of the secret and the unseen world. When she rests her feet with beauty and dignity, She stops the heavens from turning in their orbit. If she raises her voice in minstrelsy, She brings the departed soul back to the dead. The bird of the soul, with the melody of the harp, She directs towards the gardens of eternity.' When the merchant heard the attributes of that fairy, Desire for her stirred in his heart. The manifestation of that moon through the window of his ear Pillaged his intellect and became the calamity of his mind. O how many a person who never saw the Friend's face, Yet suffered the chastisement of love from a report! Those reports of the Lord of the world Which the Prophet gave openly and secretly, That He is Generous, and Creator, and Provider, Were all for the sake of making you fall in love. Likewise, from the Prophet and his noble family, Or from the companions and the great saints, These noble attributes and spiritual states, Regarding which books have been composed, Are all for your love-making, That you may become perfect on the path of love. But I see so many layers of veils, Spun around you from every side, That no sight comes from your eye, Nor any hearing of a report from your ear.
