بخش ۱۱۶ - حکایت نصیحت قبول کردن عمر عبدالعزیز از غلام خود که خازن بیت المال بود / Section 116 - The Tale of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz Accepting the Advice of His Servant Who Was the Treasurer of the Public Treasury

Original content

English translation

Umar the Second, who like the first, Had established a true precedent of justice in religion, Had children in the privacy of his household, Who, like their father, were all blessed. Eid arrived, and they gathered before their father, All becoming like moths around that candle. They shed tears from their eyes like a candle, Saying, 'O you by whom the distress of the world is resolved, With naked bodies, we are all like candles; We have all gathered here for the sake of clothing. There is no talk of satin or precious robes, But like a lantern, we lack even a shirt. How long must we bear the reproaches of the nurse, And endure the coldness of the neighbors' taunts?' When Umar saw the weeping of his children, He did not approve of the burden of grief upon their hearts. He had a servant of wondrously auspicious fortune, Whose duty was being the treasurer of the public treasury. He said to him, 'Bring forth from your treasury, My monthly allowance, neither more nor less. Provide for these few beloved children of mine, And defer my allowance to the next month.' The servant said, 'O Master, you who are The preface to the ledger of faith, I do not know who is your guarantor That you will live for even another week. How can you consume the wealth of the Muslims? If you die, who will repay the debt?' When Umar heard that beautiful point, He praised him and said to his children, 'Turn your faces to the corner of pain, And cool down this desire in your hearts, For without filtering the blood of the liver, It is not possible to rest in Paradise.'
