Original content

English translation

O you who fall short in the dominion of religion, How long will you boast of your descent from Adam? A human is one who possesses religion within, Who has erased doubt and holds certainty within. If this clay form were a human, The door and the wall would not fall short of it. Indeed, it would surpass it in appearance— The stone of the wall in the thread of existence. If you are human, turn your back on the world, And face the flourishing abode of Islam. Go before the Sharia and measure Islam; Its pillars, like its letters, amount to five. Its first pillar, which is the testimony, Is a path that runs contrary to habit. These are two paths, both connected to each other, Traversed by the masters of the heart. One of them opens the divine realm, Becoming the path showing unity to your Lord. And the other scatters the treasure of chivalry, Drawing you into the threshold of prophethood. And if you look at the end, it is but one path; In the end, both belong to Allah. It is an exceedingly magnificent vessel, Its power of speech fashioned from sound and letter. There is nothing within it but the honey of felicity, Every Alif in it is like a raised finger of testimony. Withdraw your hand from this honey out of habit, And like the Alif, raise the finger of testimony. Perchance from the writer of the decree of felicity, You may get to lick a finger's worth of this honey. Whatever page the pen writes it upon, It guards it from the fly of the diacritical dot. Meaning, from this honey which has turned out pure, May anyone of a fly-like nature be far removed. Its 'La' is in this demon-infested wasteland, A two-pronged fork for the necks of the demons of passion. Indeed, it appeared like a compass, Drawing a line of non-existence around both worlds. It has come as a cutting tool, like scissors, So that you may cut away whatever is of no use. Since you are quick-handed with its two fingers, Sever the bond of attachment from all that exists. When the celestial sphere comes to hand you the scissors, Place its satin fabric before the blades. So that, through your high aspiration, it may cut The robe of monotheism to fit your stature. The beloved of every soul who is alluring, Has found adornment from this beautiful robe. The forest of monotheism in this snare of a world Is the sanctuary of the lion-hearted. If you are lion-hearted, turn your face to that forest; Make companionship with the lion-hearted your practice. Be of the same forest and the same practice with them all; Be of one heart, one face, and one mind. Turn your face to the One who gave you a face, And opened a hundred doors of hope to you. Fix your eye on the One who from the first day Has been the light of your world-seeing eye. Cling to the One by whom was established Your stature of power, brushing the heavens with its crown. The Maker without peer who created you— Let me tell you why He created you: So that you may recognize Him by the attribute of oneness— Not a oneness of smallness or fewness, But a oneness far greater than few or many, A hundred steps ahead of few and many. When you find the path to His recognition, You will step forward in worship. You will turn your face to the prayer niche of worship, And acquire the means of felicity. Whatever a servant does outside of these two deeds, Will ultimately bring him shame. He will carry his baggage to the border of regret, And bear the brand of regret to the Resurrection. There will flame from his grief-stricken heart The fire of that regret, forever and ever.
