English translation

O you by whom the bright moon's robe was split, Before you the sun came, obedient to your command. When the palace of prophethood rose high through you, It cast a fracture into the chamber of Khosrow. The cloud was the umbrella raising your stature high, And the sun sat in the shadow of your umbrella. No one saw your shadow on the earth, For it was light, and the shadow of the sun was nothing more. Your soul was pure from the pollution of the body, Thus it cast no shadow on this heap of dust. Your eye saw from behind as well as from the front, Seeing as the eyes of all the world see from the front. You are a spirit, and no direction is absent from you; In your sight, front and back are one and the same. You are a candle, and from you light reaches the assembly; A candle has no front or back. The black stone in your hand chanted praises, That chanting became a torment for the black-hearted. The ocean of generosity was surging from your fist, And the distributor was the gap of your fingers. Thousands upon thousands of hungry and thirsty, Quenched their thirst and fed from that sip and morsel. The palm tree, which was firmly rooted in the ground, Leaped from its place at your command. It strolled in whichever direction you called it, And made its dwelling wherever you told it to. At the entrance of the cave which was your passage, And became your fortress against the pursuit of the enemy, Why did one creature weave a web? For what did the other lay its eggs? Lest any harm should reach you from the people of opposition, This one came as an egg-layer and that one as an armor-weaver. That banquet which came to you at midnight, Was a daily sustenance from the table of 'I spend my night [with my Lord].' 'He feeds me' was the food and 'He gives me drink' was the water; What a wholesome food and drink this was! When your lip approached the morsel of the kid, The morsel cried out from beneath your lip. It said: 'Do not eat me, I am tainted with poison, Even though this sugar of yours would take away the bitterness of poison.' The handful of sand that you scattered from your hand Targeted the eyes of those who lacked vision. Like kohl, it guaranteed the light of vision, While it became a hot iron rod in the eyes of the enemy. The helpless Jami, who is your melody-maker, Has his lips sealed by the subtleties of your miracles. Though he has come like a blade sharp as a gem, Nay, rather he has come raining gems like a cloud, He desired a brilliant gem for your praise, But the sweat of shame poured from his face onto the dust.
