Section 43 - The Third Unveiling of the Veil, on Faith (Iman)

Original content

English translation

God, the Exalted, said: 'O you who believe, believe!' (an-Nisa 4:136). And in another place He said: 'O you who believe.' And the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: 'Faith is that you believe in God, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day.' Faith, in terms of its lexical meaning, is 'assent/affirmation' (tasdiq). Among people there is much discussion and much disagreement concerning the establishment of its ruling in the religious law. The Mu'tazila call the whole of the acts of obedience—both of knowledge and of practice—faith, and for this reason they remove a servant from faith on account of sin; and the Khawarij say the same, calling a servant an unbeliever for a sin he commits. Another group call faith merely verbal profession, and a group call it gnosis (ma'rifat) alone, and a group of the theologians of the Sunna call it unconditional assent (tasdiq mutlaq). I have made a separate book explaining this; my purpose here is to establish the doctrine of the shaykhs among the Sufis. The generality of them, concerning faith, fall into two divisions, just as the jurists of both parties do: One group say: 'Faith is profession, assent, and works.' Such as Fudayl ibn 'Iyad, Bishr al-Hafi, Khayr al-Nassaj, Sumnun al-Muhibb, Abu Hamza al-Baghdadi, Muhammad al-Jariri—may God be pleased with them—and besides them a great many. And one group say: 'Faith is profession and assent.' Such as Ibrahim ibn Adham, Dhu'l-Nun al-Misri, Abu Yazid, Hatim, Abu Sulayman al-Darani, Harith al-Muhasibi, Junayd, Sahl ibn 'Abdullah, Shaqiq, Muhammad ibn al-Fadl al-Balkhi, and besides them—may God be pleased with them all. Another group of the jurists of the community, such as Malik, al-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and besides them a group, hold to the former view. And again Abu Hanifa and al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl al-Balkhi, and their companions such as Muhammad ibn al-Hasan, Dawud al-Ta'i, and Abu Yusuf—may God have mercy on them—hold to this latter view. In truth this disagreement comes back to expression, without a difference in meaning. Now I will explain this meaning by way of brevity, so that it may become clear to you, and so that on account of this disagreement you may not call anyone in faith one who opposes the fundamental principle—God willing.
