Original content

English translation

O you who have raised the banner of knowledge, Who like a banner are exalted by knowledge! You made yourself a standard of knowledge, But when action came, you cast the banner down. Your claim of possessing knowledge is a boast of soundness, While your discarding of knowledge is proof of weakness. You claim wisdom out of ignorance, The harvest of your study is nothingness. The master shouts: 'I am an alchemist, Copper becomes gold by the excellence of my craft!' But if you put your hand into his pocket, Like the palm of a bankrupt, it is empty of gold. When the purse is empty of gold and silver, What is the use of a philosopher's claim to the elixir? The collection of books, of both good and bad quality, Has become like a pile of bricks around you. Breach that wall which from all four sides Has erected a barrier between you and your ultimate goal. Every leaf of those books has become a veil; Turn your face away from those multi-layered veils. So that tomorrow you may surpass everyone, Turn the page of those books today. Knowledge studied on an incorrect path— The book itself becomes black-faced from such knowledge. Do not seek the light of the heart from the Sinai of the chest, Do not seek brightness from an unseeing eye. Its indications point toward disbelief, Its glad tidings are a source of fear. The thought of its Healing (Shifa) is entirely sickness, Its desire for Deliverance (Najat) is from captivity. The principles of medicine which he laid down in the Canon (Qanun), He did not set foot outside the rule. However, he hid from the seekers The face of the Cause behind the veil of cause. The true quality of divine knowledge is cause-burning, While the way of the ignorant is cause-learning. Seek medicine from the Prophet, for the Medicine of the Prophet (Tibb al-Nabi) Will make you a stranger to all ailments. It will grant you healing from the disease of ignorance, And purify you from the turbidity of the self. It turns your face away from secondary causes and conditions, And detaches your character from everything other than the Truth. Your life has been spent on principles (Usul) and branches (Furu'), But you never returned to your true Origin (Asl). Since you have no standing or awareness of the Objectives (Maqasid), Do not stop in seeking them at the Stations (Mawaqif). Since the path did not open to you from the Key (Miftah), Seek the fortune of victory from the door of the Opener (Al-Fattah). If your heart is not pure of obstacles, Unveiling obstacles is not within the scope of the Unveiler (Kashshaf). Do not seek the light of guidance from the Guidance (Hidayah), Do not tread the path to the ultimate end through the Limit (Nihayah). Abandon hypocrisy and reduce deceit, Receive knowledge from the fountainhead of holiness. Whatever is not 'Allah said' and 'the Messenger said', Is superfluous to the people of excellence. Behold the grace of God and do not be superfluous; Ignorance has gone beyond limits, do not act foolishly. When He gives you knowledge, do not turn your head from action, For unemployed knowledge is worth nothing at all. When your foot is rubbed on the carpet of action, Guide the actionless ones toward action. You must first acquire manners yourself, And then teach manners to others. When you become a teacher to others, Seek little compensation for it from the world. Knowledge is the jewel, and the rest is clay; That is like reality, and others like fantasy. Why sell jewels for clay? Why give away realities for a fantasy?
