English translation

O you whose heart's rein is in the hand of yearning, The lover's journey becomes complete through yearning. If yearning does not become the guide of your path, The Kaaba of union will not be your refuge. Yearning is the hook for the heart of the age, The attractor of the minds of those who are separated. Yearning shortens the long path, And shuts the door of greed in a person's face. Yearning is a lightning bolt that illuminates the dwelling, Burning the harvest of whatever obstructs the way. Any mountain of suffering that lies on the path, Before the yearning lover, is less than a straw. When the flame of yearning blazes from the burning heart, It cannot be extinguished by a hundred seas of water. Whatever is within your reach to soothe you, That is not yearning; it is lust and whim. One cannot step onto the path of seeking out of whim, Nor pitch one's tent in the lane of joy. Whim is the way of the whim-seeking; The lover's soul is pure of whim. Whim is a cloud empty of rain; Its shadow is the source of misfortune. Neither does the field of hope drink water from it, Nor does it take fever from the body, nor burning from the heart. The master who is attached to the worldly possessions, Has cast his ship into the whirlpool of the world. Sleeping on the leather mat of hope, drunk with pride, His nature full of mischief and turmoil from the ego and desires. His eyes brightened by the face of the beloved, Becoming a window in the palace of vanity. His heart veiled behind the curtain of greed, The face of the secret remaining hidden from him. His hand pained by the arm of abandonment, Clutching at the hem of deprivation. His feet traveling the path of error, Taking steps following the ego and desires. His stomach plundering both cooked and raw food, Devouring together both lawful and unlawful things. His ears deaf to the words of the advisor, But submissive to the melody of the musician. Idle talk is the art of his teeth, And jesting is the rule of his smiling lips. His night is pregnant with every sin and corruption, His day tearing the veil of truthfulness and rectitude. If, with such actions and character, he suddenly Hears of a miraculous deed performed by the people of God: That such-and-such master became a world-traveler, And crossed the sea with dry feet; And another tore the veil of habit, Taking flight and flying like birds; And another looked towards a mountain, And the stone mountain became gold from his gaze; And another took a step of miraculous grace, Traversing a wilderness in a single breath; And another raised the army of spiritual resolve, And shed the blood of an army with a single prayer— From these reports, a desire falls into his heart, That these spiritual stations might also be achieved by him. For a few days, he takes the path of true men, Adopting the way of those traveling the spiritual path. But that way, being devoid of sincerity, Yields no benefit except trouble for the heart. Sincerity is required to increase yearning, So that it becomes a guide to the destination. When sincere yearning pulls a person's camel litter, The Kaaba of union becomes his dwelling place. It leaves no obstacle on the way, Until he makes his home in that Kaaba. Rather, if the illusion of existence, for instance, Should disrupt the way to the goal, Like a ship, it shatters it to pieces, And casts the belongings of his existence into the sea. When he washes his hands of himself in those waves, The fish of his desire falls into his net.
