سلسلة الذهب / Silsilat al-Dhahab (The Chain of Gold)

Summary

Silsilat al-Dhahab (سلسلة الذهب, 'The Chain of Gold') is the first and longest of the seven didactic masnavis in Jami's Haft Awrang ('Seven Thrones'). Composed in the ramal meter, it is divided into three books ('daftars') and covers a wide range of religious, ethical, philosophical, and mystical (Sufi) themes.

Key Structure and Themes

  • Structural Division: The work is structured as a series of instructional expositions followed by illustrative stories, parables, and anecdotes.
  • Theological and Ethical Guidance: Jami expounds on Islamic tenets, Sufi metaphysics, and ethical behavior, criticizing social hypocrisy, false claims of spirituality or lineage, and the corruption of worldly powers.
  • Sufi Path: It outlines the stages of spiritual ascent, the nature of divine love, and the proper relationship between the seeker, the spiritual master, and the Prophet's household (Ahl al-Bayt).
