سبحة الابرار / Subhat al-Abrar (The Rosary of the Pious)

Subhat al-Abrar (The Rosary of the Pious)

سبحة الابرار is the fourth of the seven masnavi poems that make up Jami's collection Haft Awrang (the Seven Thrones). It is a didactic and mystical work organized around successive ethical and spiritual stations of the Sufi path — among them repentance (توبه), steadfastness, scrupulous piety and abstinence (ورع and زهد), contentment (قناعت), humility (تواضع), truthfulness (صدق), and sincere devotion (اخلاص).

A recurring feature of the work is that its treatment of each station culminates in a مناجات (an intimate supplication addressed to God), in which the poet asks for the grace to attain and hold fast to that station rather than claiming it as his own achievement. The numbered Section (بخش) supplications — such as the one seeking repentance and its steadfastness — are constituent parts of this single work, and belong under it rather than directly under the whole Haft Awrang collection.
