Yusof o Zoleykha (Yusuf and Zulaikha) — the Fifth Masnavi of Jami's Haft Awrang

Overview

Yusof o Zoleykha (Yusuf and Zulaikha) is the fifth of the seven narrative masnavi poems that together make up Jami's Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones). It retells the Qur'anic and Biblical story of Joseph and the wife of Potiphar — here named Zulaikha — recast as a Sufi allegory of the soul's ascent from earthly, sensual love toward purified divine love.

Structure

The poem unfolds as an ordered sequence of numbered sections (بخش / bakhsh), each advancing the story: the lineage and beauty of Zulaikha, her first dream-vision of Joseph, her awakening and secret torment, her journey to Egypt, her mistaken hopes, and the long path to union. Because these sections form one continuous masnavi, an individual section such as Section 18 (the dawn breeze waking Zulaikha) belongs within Yusof o Zoleykha rather than hanging directly beneath the whole Haft Awrang collection.
