یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zulaykha (a masnavi of Jami's Haft Awrang)

یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zulaykha

Yusuf va Zulaykha is one of the seven narrative poems (masnavis) that make up Jami's Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones). Composed in the 15th century, it retells in Persian verse the story of the prophet Joseph (Yusuf) and Zulaykha, the wife of the Egyptian Aziz, drawing on the Quranic account and a Sufi allegorical reading in which Zulaykha's earthly passion is gradually transformed into love for the Divine.

The poem unfolds across numbered sections (بخش) that trace the narrative arc from Zulaykha's early dreams of Yusuf, through her nurturing and serving of him, her longing and pleas for union, his refusal and imprisonment, their separation, and her final spiritual reorientation. This work is the immediate literary container to which the individual numbered sections belong.
