Yusuf and Zulaykha / یوسف و زلیخا

یوسف و زلیخا is the fifth of the seven masnavis (narrative poems) that make up Jami's Haft Awrang. It retells the Quranic story of the prophet Joseph (Yusuf) and Zulaykha, wife of the Egyptian dignitary, as a Sufi allegory in which Zulaykha's consuming passion for Joseph's beauty figures the soul's ascent from earthly desire to divine love.

The poem unfolds across many numbered sections (بخش) that trace Zulaykha's first dream-vision of Joseph, her longing and stratagems, Joseph's steadfast chastity, their separation while he is imprisoned and later rules Egypt, and her final blindness, repentance, and restoration. Each section is a self-contained episode; together they form the continuous narrative arc of this single masnavi.
