یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zulaykha (Jami)

Yusuf and Zulaykha

یوسف و زلیخا (Yusuf and Zulaykha) is a narrative mathnavi by the 15th-century Persian poet Jami, forming one of the seven constituent poems of his Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones). It retells the Quranic and biblical story of Joseph and the wife of the Egyptian noble (here named Zulaykha), reframed as a Sufi allegory in which earthly passion becomes a ladder toward divine love.

The poem unfolds across many numbered sections (بخش): Zulaykha painting her likeness to tempt Joseph, her pleading and his restraint, the women of Egypt cutting their hands at the sight of his beauty, Joseph's imprisonment, Zulaykha's grief and repentance, and her eventual spiritual transformation. Because each بخش continues a single, ordered storyline, these section nodes belong under this one work rather than being attached directly to the whole Haft Awrang collection, mirroring the container structure used for other long Persian narrative poems.
