Yusuf and Zulaykha (یوسف و زلیخا)

Yusuf and Zulaykha is the fifth of the seven narrative poems (masnavis) that make up Jami's Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones), composed in the 15th century. It retells the story of Joseph (Yusuf) and the wife of the Aziz of Egypt (here named Zulaykha) as a Sufi allegory in which earthly passion becomes a ladder toward love of divine Beauty.

The work is organized into numbered sections (بخش) that unfold a continuous narrative arc: Zulaykha's dream-born love for Joseph, her disillusion and marriage to the Aziz, her longing, temptation, and separation, Joseph's steadfast chastity and imprisonment, and their final reunion and death. These sections are meant to be read in sequence and share recurring imagery (sun and shadow, prison and palace, the sword hidden in its sheath).
