یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zulaykha (Jami's masnavi within Haft Awrang)

Yusuf and Zulaykha

Yusuf and Zulaykha (یوسف و زلیخا) is one of the seven narrative poems (masnavis) that make up Jami's Haft Awrang. It retells the Quranic and Biblical story of Joseph and Zulaykha (the wife of the Aziz of Egypt) as a Sufi allegory of divine love, in which Zulaykha's consuming earthly passion for Joseph is gradually purified into longing for God.

The poem is organized into numbered sections (بخش) that narrate the successive stages of the tale — Zulaykha's dream-visions of Joseph, her pleading and stratagems, the building of the seven chambers, Joseph's flight and imprisonment, Zulaykha's grief and eventual repentance, and their final reunion.

Within the prerequisite structure this work is the immediate literary container: Haft Awrang (collection) → Yusuf and Zulaykha (one masnavi) → individual sections. Understanding it as a single coherent narrative poem is prerequisite to placing any one section in context.
