Yusuf and Zulaykha

Yusuf and Zulaykha (یوسف و زلیخا) is one of the seven narrative poems (masnavis) that make up Jami's Haft Awrang. Written in rhyming couplets, it retells the story of the prophet Joseph and the Egyptian noblewoman Zulaykha as a Sufi allegory of the soul's passage from earthly passion toward divine love.

The poem unfolds across many numbered sections (بخش), following the narrative arc from Zulaykha's first visionary dream of Joseph, through his enslavement and rise in Egypt, her overwhelming love and the attempted seduction, Joseph's imprisonment, and their eventual reunion and spiritual transformation. The prison sequence — Joseph's confinement and Zulaykha's grief, regret, and lament over their separation — forms one connected movement within this larger structure.
