یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zulaykha (Jami's Masnavi)

Yusuf and Zulaykha

یوسف و زلیخا (Yusuf and Zulaykha) is the fifth of the seven masnavis that together make up Jami's Haft Awrang. It retells the Quranic and Biblical story of the prophet Joseph and of Zulaykha's love for him as a Sufi allegory: earthly, metaphorical love (eshq-e majazi) becomes a ladder to true, divine love (eshq-e haqiqi), and Joseph's beauty stands for the manifestation of divine Beauty in the world.

The poem is organized into numbered sections (بخش) that carry the narrative from the primordial shining-forth of Joseph's beauty in the chamber of the unseen, through Zulaykha's dreams, passion, trial, and blindness, to their final spiritual union. Each individual section belongs under this masnavi, which in turn belongs under the Haft Awrang collection.
