یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zulaykha (Jami's masnavi)

Yusuf and Zulaykha

یوسف و زلیخا is the fifth of the seven masnavis that make up Jami's Haft Awrang. It is a long narrative poem that retells the story of the prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) and Zulaykha, wife of the Egyptian minister, treating their love as an allegory of the soul's longing for divine beauty.

The work unfolds as a sequence of numbered sections (بخش) that trace the story from Joseph's early life and the well, through his sale into Egypt, Zulaykha's nurturing of him, her repeated attempts at union and his restraint, and his eventual rise. Individual sections such as Section 42 (Joseph desiring to tend sheep) belong under this masnavi rather than directly under the whole Haft Awrang collection.
