Yusuf and Zulaykha (یوسف و زلیخا)

Yusuf and Zulaykha is the fifth of the seven narrative poems (masnavis) that make up Jami's Haft Awrang. Completed in the late 15th century, it retells the Quranic and Biblical story of the prophet Joseph (Yusuf) and Zulaykha as a Sufi allegory of the soul's longing for divine beauty and love.

The poem unfolds across dozens of numbered sections (بخش) that trace a continuous narrative arc: Joseph's childhood dreams, his brothers' envy and the well, his sale and journey into Egypt, Zulaykha's overwhelming passion, the accusation and Joseph's imprisonment, his interpretation of the courtiers' and the king's dreams, his release and rise to power, and the final reconciliation with Zulaykha.
