یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zulaykha (masnavi of Jami)

Yusuf and Zulaykha

یوسف و زلیخا (Yusuf and Zulaykha) is one of the seven masnavi poems that make up Jami's Haft Awrang. It retells the Quranic and biblical story of Joseph (یوسف) and the wife of the Aziz of Egypt (زلیخا), reframing it as a Sufi allegory of the soul's longing for divine beauty and love.

The poem unfolds as a sequence of numbered sections (بخش) that carry the narrative forward: Zulaykha's dreams of an unseen beloved, the marriage proposals, her betrothal to the Aziz of Egypt, her journey to Egypt, and her eventual recognition of and union with Joseph. Each individual section (for example, Section 22 through Section 65) belongs to this work rather than directly to the broader Haft Awrang collection.
