یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zulaykha (masnavi of Jami's Haft Awrang)

Yusuf and Zulaykha

یوسف و زلیخا (Yusuf and Zulaykha) is the fifth of the seven masnavis that make up Jami's Haft Awrang. It is a long narrative romance in rhyming couplets that retells the story of the prophet Joseph and Zulaykha, elaborating it into a Sufi allegory of the soul's longing for divine Beauty.

The poem is divided into numbered sections (بخش), each narrating one episode of the tale — Zulaykha's dream and love, her separation and grief, and her eventual repentance, renewed sight, and union with Joseph. Individual section nodes (for example, Section 64 through Section 69, which trace Zulaykha's affliction after the Aziz's death, her waylaying of Joseph, the breaking of her idol, and their marriage) belong under this masnavi rather than directly under the whole Haft Awrang collection.
