یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zulaykha (masnavi within Haft Awrang)

Yusuf and Zulaykha (Yusof o Zoleykha)

یوسف و زلیخا is one of the seven narrative poems (masnavis) that make up Jami's collection Haft Awrang. Composed in rhyming couplets, it retells the Quranic and biblical story of the prophet Joseph and Zulaykha (the wife of the Aziz of Egypt) as a Sufi allegory of the soul's longing for divine Beauty and the transformation of earthly passion into spiritual love.

The work is organized into numbered sections (بخش), each narrating a discrete episode of the story: Zulaykha's dreams of Joseph, her pleas and stratagems for union, Joseph's steadfast restraint, his imprisonment, Zulaykha's grief in separation, and their eventual reunion and her turn toward God. Individual sections such as بخش ۶۵ are sub-units of this masnavi rather than of the whole Haft Awrang collection.
