یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zulaykha (masnavi within Haft Awrang)

Yusuf and Zulaykha

یوسف و زلیخا (Yusuf and Zulaykha) is one of the seven narrative poems (masnavis) that make up Jami's Haft Awrang. Composed in rhyming couplets, it retells the story of the prophet Joseph and the Egyptian noblewoman Zulaykha as a Sufi allegory of the soul's passage from earthly passion toward divine love.

The poem unfolds across numbered sections (بخش) that narrate a continuous episodic arc: Zulaykha's dreams and growing love, her nurse's counsel, her stratagems to win union, Joseph's steadfast chastity, the ordeal of separation and imprisonment, and their eventual reunion and transformation. Each individual section (for example بخش ۴۹ / Section 49) is a unit of this single masnavi, not a stand-alone item of the whole collection.
