Yusuf and Zulaykha (Yusuf o Zoleykha) — Jami's Masnavi within the Haft Awrang

Yusuf and Zulaykha

Yusuf o Zoleykha is the fifth of the seven narrative poems that make up Jami's Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones), completed in 1483. Written in rhyming couplets (masnavi form), it retells the Quranic and Biblical story of the prophet Joseph and Zulaykha, wife of the Aziz of Egypt, reading their love as a Sufi allegory of the soul's longing for divine Beauty.

The poem unfolds through numbered sections (بخش) that trace the narrative arc: Zulaykha's early dreams of Joseph, her marriage to the Aziz, the years of separation and unrequited desire, Joseph's imprisonment, the death of the Aziz, and the lovers' eventual union and Zulaykha's restored sight and youth. Each numbered section is a self-contained episode within this larger frame, so the individual section poems belong under this work rather than directly under the whole Haft Awrang collection.
