یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zuleikha (Masnavi within Haft Awrang)

Yusuf and Zuleikha

یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf and Zuleikha is the fifth of the seven narrative poems (masnavis) that make up Jami's Haft Awrang. Written in rhyming couplets, it retells the Quranic and Biblical romance of the prophet Joseph (Yusuf) and Zuleikha, wife of the Aziz of Egypt, reframing it as an allegory of the soul's longing for divine Beauty.

The poem unfolds across many numbered sections (بخش) that trace Zuleikha's dream-born love, her father's proposal to the Aziz of Egypt, her marriage and disappointment, her passion for Joseph, their separation, and their eventual union. Each individual بخش section (for example, Section 22, Section 23, Section 24, and onward) is a constituent part of this single masnavi rather than a direct piece of the whole Haft Awrang collection.

Understanding this poem as a distinct work clarifies why its sections form one continuous storyline, separate from the other masnavis of Haft Awrang such as Layla and Majnun.
