یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf o Zulaikha (Jami)

Yusuf o Zulaikha

یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf o Zulaikha is the fifth of the seven mathnavis (long narrative poems) that together make up Jami's Haft Awrang. It retells the Quranic and Biblical story of Joseph (Yusuf) and the wife of the Egyptian noble (Zulaikha) as a mystical allegory: earthly passion for created beauty is gradually purified into love for the divine, and the carnal soul (nafs) is disciplined from self-regard toward humility and lofty aspiration.

The poem is divided into numbered sections (بخش). Each individual section — for example, passages addressing the nafs and its ascent from self-conceit to letting go — belongs to this work, which in turn belongs to the whole Haft Awrang collection. This intermediate work sits between the collection and its constituent sections.
