یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf o Zulaykha (a masnavi within Haft Awrang)

Yusuf o Zulaykha

Yusuf o Zulaykha is the fifth of the seven masnavi poems that together form Jami's Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones). It retells the Quranic and Biblical story of the prophet Joseph (Yusuf) and Zulaykha as a Sufi allegory in which Zulaykha's consuming earthly passion is gradually purified into divine love.

The work is organized into numbered sections (بخش) that follow a continuous narrative arc: Zulaykha's successive dream visions of Joseph, her descent into lovesickness and madness, her recognition of him at the Egyptian court, her stratagems to win him, his God-given restraint, their eventual union, and her spiritual transformation.

Because each section belongs to this single masnavi rather than directly to the whole seven-poem collection, the individual poem-sections of the Joseph and Zulaykha story are learning objects grouped under this work.
