یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf o Zulaykha (Jami's narrative masnavi)

Yusuf o Zulaykha

Yusuf o Zulaykha is one of the seven narrative poems (masnavis) that make up Jami's collection Haft Awrang (the Seven Thrones). Composed in rhyming couplets, it retells the Quranic and Biblical story of Joseph (Yusuf) and the love of Zulaykha for him, reframed as a Sufi allegory of the soul's yearning for divine Beauty.

The poem is internally organized into numbered sections (بخش / bakhsh), each treating an episode of the story — Zulaykha's dream, her arrival in Egypt, the women cutting their hands, Joseph's imprisonment, and Zulaykha's separation and longing. These individual sections belong under this masnavi rather than directly under the whole Haft Awrang collection.

Understanding the overall narrative and allegorical frame of Yusuf o Zulaykha is a prerequisite for reading and interpreting any single section of the poem in context.
