یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf u Zulaikha (Fifth Masnavi of Jami's Haft Awrang)

Yusuf u Zulaikha

The fifth of the seven masnavis that make up Jami's Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones), completed in 1483 CE. It is a romantic and mystical narrative poem that retells the Quranic and Biblical story of the prophet Joseph (Yusuf) and Zulaikha, the wife of the Egyptian minister.

Jami reworks the tale as an allegory of divine love: Zulaikha's overwhelming passion for Joseph's beauty represents the soul's yearning for God, whose absolute Beauty is mirrored in created forms. The work unfolds across numbered sections (بخش), each a self-contained episode — from the pre-eternal manifestation of Joseph's beauty in the world of the Unseen, through his casting into the well and sale into Egypt, to Zulaikha's love, trial, and eventual union.

Recognizing this masnavi as a single continuous work is prerequisite to placing any individual section within its narrative sequence and its Sufi allegorical arc.
