Yusuf u Zulaykha (Masnavi of Jami)

Yusuf u Zulaykha

Yusuf u Zulaykha is the masnavi (narrative poem) within Jami's Haft Awrang that retells the Quranic and biblical story of the prophet Joseph (Yusuf) and Zulaykha, wife of the Egyptian Aziz. Jami reworks the tale as a Sufi allegory in which Zulaykha's consuming earthly passion is gradually purified into love for the divine, mirrored in Joseph's steadfast chastity and God-given protection.

The work unfolds across numbered sections (بخش) that trace a continuous narrative arc: Zulaykha's dreams and infatuation, her stratagems for union, Joseph's temptation and preservation, the women of Egypt, Joseph's imprisonment, the long separation and Zulaykha's grief, and their eventual reunion, her restored sight and youth, and spiritual transformation. Each individual section is a movement within this single poem rather than a freestanding text.

This node serves as the intermediate literary container between the collection Haft Awrang and its constituent Yusuf-u-Zulayk...
