یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf u Zulaykha - the Fifth Masnavi of Jami's Haft Awrang

Yusuf u Zulaykha

Yusuf u Zulaykha (یوسف و زلیخا) is the fifth of the seven narrative poems (masnavis) that make up Jami's Haft Awrang. It retells the Quranic and popular story of the prophet Joseph (Yusuf) and Zulaykha, the wife of the Egyptian Aziz, as a Sufi allegory in which earthly passion is gradually purified into love of the divine.

The poem unfolds through numbered sections (بخش) that follow the narrative arc: Zulaykha's dreams and growing love, her marriage to the Aziz, her acquisition and nurturing of Joseph, her attempts at union and Joseph's chaste refusal, his imprisonment, his rise to power in Egypt, and the eventual transformation of Zulaykha's desire into spiritual devotion. Individual sections such as Section 41 are units of this single masnavi and should sit beneath it rather than directly beneath the whole Haft Awrang collection.
