Yusuf va Zulaykha (Yusof o Zoleykha) — Jami's Fifth Masnavi in the Haft Awrang

Yusuf va Zulaykha

Yusuf va Zulaykha is the fifth of the seven masnavi poems that make up Jami's Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones), completed in 1483. It reworks the Quranic and Biblical story of the prophet Joseph and the love of Zulaykha, wife of the Aziz of Egypt, into a sustained Sufi allegory of the soul's longing for absolute Beauty and its passage through desire, trial, separation, and restoration.

The poem unfolds as an ordered sequence of numbered sections (بخش): Zulaykha's successive dreams of Joseph, the awakening and derangement of her love, the years of separation, the episodes at the house and the prison, and her eventual spiritual and worldly renewal. Because each section presupposes the narrative and thematic frame established by the poem as a whole, this masnavi is the proper container and prerequisite level between the Haft Awrang collection and its individual sections.
