یوسف و زلیخا / Yusuf va Zulaykha

یوسف و زلیخا (Yusuf va Zulaykha) is the fifth of the seven masnavis that together make up Jami's Haft Awrang. It retells in Persian verse the love story of Yusuf (Joseph) and Zulaykha, drawn from the Quran and earlier tradition, and reads it as an allegory of the soul's longing for divine Beauty. Like other masnavis of its kind, the work opens with a sequence of devotional prologue sections — praise of God, praise of the Prophet Muhammad, and his Ascension (Mi'raj) — before the narrative of Yusuf begins. Its individual sections (بخش), such as the Mi'raj section, belong under this work rather than directly under the whole Haft Awrang collection, which gathers seven distinct masnavis.
