English translation

And among them: the Pole (Qutb) of his age and unique in his time, Abu al-Qasim Ali al-Kurrakani, may Allah be pleased with him and grant him contentment.

In his own time he is without peer and in his age without equal. His beginning was very good, and his travels were strictly according to the requirement of spiritual practice. In his time the hearts of all the people of the threshold turned toward him, and the reliance of all seekers rested upon him; in unveiling the states of his disciples he is a manifest sign, and he is learned in the various branches of knowledge, and each of his disciples is an adornment to a whole world of learning. After him a good successor has remained for him — God willing — who will be the exemplar of the community. And he is the Tongue of the Age, Abu Ali al-Fadl ibn Muhammad al-Farmadi, may Allah preserve him, who has cast aside his own portion for the sake of that great man and turned away from all that is other, and God the Exalted and Sanctified has, through His blessings, made him the eloquent tongue of that master.

One day I was sitting before the shaykh, recounting my own states and attainments — so that I might refine my spiritual condition before him, for he is the discerning critic of the age — and he, may Allah be pleased with him, listened to it with respect. The arrogance of childhood and the fire of youth made me eager for that speech, and a thought took shape in my mind: 'Perhaps this elder had no passage along this path in his own beginnings, that he shows such humility and displays such need in my regard?' At that moment he perceived this within my inner self and said: 'Friend of my father, this humility of mine is not for you nor for your state. How could the Transformer of states come into an impossible station? For this humility I offer to the Transformer of states, and it is general toward all seekers, not particular to you.' When I heard this, I fell from my own hands (was overcome). He saw that in me and said: 'O son, a human being has no more relation to this Path than this: that when he is bound to the Path, the illusion of attainment seizes him, and when he is dismissed from it, the illusion of expression through words overtakes him. So his negation and affirmation, his loss and his finding, are both illusion, and a human being never escapes the bond of illusion. He must take up the threshold of servanthood and repel from himself all relations except the relation of manliness and obedience.'

And after that I had many secrets with him, and were I to occupy myself with recounting his signs I would fall short of my purpose. And God knows best.
