English translation

And among them: the champion of the ranks of the Sufis, and the interpreter of the states of the gnostics, Abu al-Qasim Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Mahmawayh al-Nasrabadi, may Allah be pleased with him.

In Nishapur he was, in loftiness of spiritual state and in the rank of great men, like Shapur in Nishapur, except that their glory was in this world while his was in the hereafter. He had wondrous speech and lofty utterances. He was a disciple of Shibli and the master of the later people of Khurasan. In his age there was none like him; he was the most learned and most pious of the people of his time in the branches of the sciences.

It is related from him that he said: 'You are between two attributions: an attribution to Adam, and an attribution to the Truth. When you attribute yourself to Adam, you enter the fields of lusts and the places of afflictions and slips, and this is the attribution that establishes humanness, according to His saying, exalted is He: "Indeed he was unjust and ignorant" (Q. 33:72). And when you attribute yourself to the Truth, you enter the stations of unveiling, proofs, and immunity, and this is the attribution that establishes servitude, according to His saying, exalted is He: "And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth in humility" (Q. 25:63).' You are between two attributions: an attribution to Adam, and an attribution to the Truth, exalted is He. When you attributed yourself to Adam, you fell into the fields of lusts and the places of afflictions and slips, for that is the attribution of worthless nature; and when you attributed yourself to the Truth, you fell into the stations of unveiling, proof, immunity, and sainthood. That attribution was to the affliction of humanness, and this attribution is the realization of servitude. The attribution of Adam is cut off at the resurrection, while the attribution of servitude is ever-standing; no change finds its way to it. When a servant attributes himself to himself or to Adam, the perfection of this is that he says: 'Indeed I have wronged myself' (Q. 28:16), and when a human being attributes himself to the Truth, he is fit for that which the Truth, exalted is He, says: 'O My servants, no fear shall be upon you this day' (Q. 43:68). And God knows best.
