و منهم: داعی عصر، و یگانهٔ دهر، ابوحمزهٔ خراسانی، رضی الله عنه
از قدمای مشایخ خراسان بود. با بوتراب صحبت داشته بود و خراز را دیده. اندر توکل قدمی تمام داشت.

و اندر حکایات مشهور است که: وی روزی به راهی می رفت، اندر چاهی افتاد و سه شبانروز اندر آن جا بماند. پس گروهی از سیاره فرا رسیدند. با خود گفت: «ایشان را آواز دهم.» بازگفت: «نی، خوب نباشد که از دون حق استعانت طلبم و این شکایت بود که ایشان را گویم: خدای تعالی مرا در چاه افکن شما بیرون آرید.» ایشان فراز آمدند، چاهی دیدند بر میانهٔ راه بی ستری و حاجزی. گفتند: «بیایید تا ما به حسبت مر این را سر بپوشیم تا کسی در این جا نفتد.» گفتا: نفس من به اضطراب آمد و از جان خود نومید شدم. چون ایشان سر چاه استوار کردند و بازگشتند، من با حق تعالی مناجاتی کردم و دل مر مرگ را بنهادم و از همه خلق نومید گشتم. چون شبانگاهی درآمد، از سر چاه حسی شنیدم. چون نیک نگاه کردم، کسی سر چاه بگشاد. جانوری دیدم عظیم بزرگ. نگاه کردم اژدهایی بود که دم فرو کرد. دانستم که نجات من در آن است و فرستادهٔ حق است، تعالی و تقدس به دم وی تعلق کردم تا مرا برکشید. هاتفی آواز داد که: «نیکو نجاتی که نجات توست، یا باحمزه، که به تلفی تو را از تلفی نجات دادیم.»
از وی پرسیدند که: «غریب کیست؟» قال: «المستوحش من الإلف. آن که از الفت مستوحش باشد.»

هر که را همه الفت ها وحشت گردد وی غریب باشد؛ از آن چه درویش را در دنیا و عقبی وطن نیست و الفت نه، اندر وطن وحشت بود وچون الف وی از کون منقطع شود وی از جمله مستوحش گردد، آنگاه غریب باشد و این درجتی بس رفیع است. والله اعلم.

English translation

And among them: the summoner of the age, and the unique one of the era, Abu Hamza al-Khorasani, may Allah be pleased with him. He was among the elder shaykhs of Khorasan. He had kept company with Butarab and had seen Kharraz. In trust (tawakkul) he had a complete standing. And it is famous among the anecdotes that: one day he was traveling on a road and fell into a well, and he remained there three days and nights. Then a group of travelers arrived. He said to himself: 'I shall call out to them.' Then he said back: 'No, it would not be right that I seek help from other than the Truth, and this would be a complaint that I make to them: that God Most High cast me into the well and you should bring me out.' They drew near and saw a well in the middle of the road without any cover or barrier. They said: 'Come, let us as a good deed cover its top so that no one falls in here.' He said: My soul fell into agitation and I despaired of my life. When they made the top of the well secure and turned back, I offered an intimate prayer to the Truth Most High, and set my heart upon death, and despaired of all creatures. When evening came, I heard a sound from the top of the well. When I looked carefully, someone opened the top of the well. I saw a huge, enormous creature. I looked; it was a dragon that lowered its tail. I understood that my salvation lay in it and that it was a messenger of the Truth, exalted and sanctified; I clung to its tail until it drew me up. A heavenly voice called out: 'What an excellent salvation, which is your salvation, O Abu Hamza, for by an act of destroying we saved you from destruction.' He was asked: 'Who is the stranger (gharib)?' He said: 'The one estranged from familiarity.' The one who is made desolate by intimacy. Whoever finds all forms of familiarity to be desolation is a stranger; for the dervish has no homeland nor familiarity in this world or the next, and in a homeland there is desolation; and when his intimacy is severed from existence, he becomes estranged from all, then he is a stranger, and this is a very lofty degree. And God knows best.
